This phenomenon is more likely to develop in cohesive groups with demographically similar members than in diverse groups that encourage independent thinking.
Several Major Arcana cards may suggest the dynamics of groupthink. A reversed Hierophant can indicate fear of exclusion if the querent challenges authority or upholds personal values. It may also point to rigidity, dogmatism, outdated principles, and unquestioning conformity. A reversed Hermit suggests a reluctance to engage in honest self-reflection or critical examination, while a reversed Hanged Man may indicate resistance to considering alternative perspectives. The Devil can symbolise surrendering personal autonomy to a charismatic leader or group driven by fear, prejudice, or scapegoating. A reversed Judgement may reflect impaired discernment and an unwillingness to embrace the self-awareness and transformation necessary to break free from collective thinking.
The Minor Arcana can reinforce these themes. A reversed Seven of Wands may indicate an inability or unwillingness to defend one’s convictions, or excessive deference to the group. The Nine of Cups can point to complacency or overconfidence, while the Eight of Swords may suggest self-imposed mental limitations that prevent independent judgement. A reversed Four of Pentacles can indicate decisions motivated by fear of losing power, status, or resources.
When these cards appear together, they invite the querent to question whether they are acting from authentic conviction or merely conforming to collective expectations. The reading encourages critical thinking, personal accountability, and the courage to maintain independent judgement, even when doing so risks disapproval from the group.
