Tarot: Free Will or Fate?

by | May 21, 2026 | Mediumship, Psychic, Spirituality | 0 comments

I’m no philosopher, but I tend to believe in free will rather than a purely deterministic universe. That said, the degree to which people can exercise free will varies enormously. This isn’t only because some are born into, or find themselves in, far more restrictive circumstances, but also because not everyone has the level of awareness required to loosen what binds them.

This might feel paradoxical: why is a tarot reader talking about free will? Isn’t tarot about discovering one’s inevitable fate?

Well, no.

What would be the point of knowing what is likely to unfold if there were nothing you could do about it? The real value of tarot lies in its ability to raise awareness and, in doing so, inform choice. At its best, it enhances free will rather than replaces it.

Tarot works through archetypal imagery that reflects the full range of human experience—something explored deeply by thinkers like Carl Jung. A reading can help someone make sense of their own story, feel seen and understood, and recognise patterns that may have been operating just below the surface. It can bring motivations into clearer focus and highlight possible future paths—both promising and challenging—that might otherwise go unnoticed.

In this way, tarot has more in common with psychotherapy than fortune-telling. It invites reflection, encourages reframing, and helps people arrive at their own insights as they move forward.

Yes, sometimes tarot points to situations that feel difficult to avoid: the challenging boss, the unreliable partner, the distant child. But rather than presenting these as fixed destinies, it highlights patterns and trajectories that are already in motion. Seen this way, tarot becomes an ally—it helps you prepare, respond more consciously, and decide where your energy is best spent.

It can also draw attention to opportunities, ensuring they are recognised and not missed, and remind you how far you’ve already come.

Tarot, then, is not about surrendering to fate. It is about engaging with your life more consciously—so that whatever unfolds, you meet it with greater awareness, intention, and choice.
